A child and a woman died in landslides at separate places in Cox`s Bazar city as a result of heavy rains.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakibuzzaman of Cox`s Bazar Sadar Police Station said that these incidents happened in Sikdar Bazar and ABC Ghona area of Ward No. 7 of Cox`s Bazar Municipality on Thursday morning.
The deceased are Jamila Akhter (30), wife of Mohammad Karim of ABC Ghona area and Nazmul Hasan (5), son of Saiful Islam of Sikdar Bazar area.
Rakibuzzaman said about the locals, "There was continuous moderate and heavy rain in Cox`s Bazar city from midnight on Wednesday. A mountain collapsed on Saiful Islam`s house early Thursday morning. The mud wall broke and his son Nazmul was buried in his sleep.
"On receiving the information, the locals removed the soil and rescued the child and took him to Cox`s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead."
Apart from this, OC Rockibuzzaman also reported the death of a woman named Jamila Akhter in the landslide.
He said, “Jamila was sleeping next to the kitchen. Her husband was sleeping in another room.
"At that time, Jamila was buried when the mountain suddenly collapsed. Later, the locals rescued him and took him to Cox`s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead."
The police officer said that the bodies of the victims are in their house.
Meanwhiloe, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasts light to moderate rain or thundershowers for all eight divisions, including Dhaka, over 24 hours starting at 9 am.
“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are likely at most places across Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in certain areas,” according to a Met office bulletin.
Both day and night temperatures may decrease by 1-2°C nationwide.
The monsoon trough extends through India’s Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal to Assam, crossing northern Bangladesh. An associated trough reaches the north Bay, indicating active monsoon conditions over Bangladesh and moderate to strong activity over the north Bay.
